“These Are The Songs” is an original Christian country song by Red Dirt Grace, written by Michael Deason. Inspired by the timeless hymns he grew up singing in a small country church, it honors the faith, hope, and grace that carry us through life’s hardest seasons.
From “Amazing Grace” to “The Old Rugged Cross,” this song is a thank-you to the hymn writers whose words still point generations to Jesus.
Lyrics & story by Michael Deason • Red Dirt Grace
In Michael’s words
I grew up in a small country church where the old hymns were more than music. They were part of our family. Long before worship bands, lights, and screens, God’s people sang truths that had been tested by time. As a young boy, I didn’t fully understand every word, but those songs found a home in my heart.
As the years passed, life brought its share of victories and valleys. There were seasons of joy, seasons of loss, and more than one battle with cancer. Through every chapter, I discovered something remarkable. The hymns I had learned as a child were still speaking the same truth they always had.
Amazing Grace still reminds me that God’s grace reaches farther than my failures.
Blessed Assurance still declares that my confidence is in Christ, not in my circumstances.
What a Friend We Have in Jesus still invites me to take every burden to Him.
The Old Rugged Cross still points to the greatest sacrifice ever made.
Victory in Jesus still proclaims that hope has the final word.
These songs have outlived generations because they were never built on changing emotions or cultural trends. They were built on the unchanging Word of God. The men and women who wrote them walked through heartbreak, loss, illness, and hardship, yet they found the same Savior we know today.
This song is my way of saying thank you to those faithful hymn writers who left us a legacy of truth. Their songs have carried millions of believers through the darkest nights and brightest mornings. They carried my parents and grandparents. They carried me. And I believe they will continue carrying generations yet to come.
Music styles may change, but truth never does. The message of these timeless hymns is just as powerful today as the day they were written because the God they sing about has never changed.
These are the songs that carried my heart, strengthened my faith, and pointed me to Jesus. And they are still carrying people home.
Blessings,
Red Dirt Grace.

Amazing Grace was more than a song
It found me when the road was long
Blessed Assurance held my hand
When I was too weak to understand
What a Friend We Have in Jesus
When the midnight prayers were all I had
Great Is Thy Faithfulness reminded me
God was still good, even when life got bad
These are the songs that carried me home
Through Amazing Grace and The Old Rugged Cross
When I could not stand, I was not alone
I found Victory in Jesus when all hope felt lost
The Old Rugged Cross points to the greatest sacrifice ever made
Jesus Paid It All still lifts me up
Nothing but the Blood still covers shame
There Is Power in the Blood still fills my cup
At Calvary I found mercy
Near the Cross I learned to stay
Rock of Ages was my shelter
Love Lifted Me when I drifted away
These are the songs that carried me home
Through Amazing Grace and The Old Rugged Cross
When I could not stand, I was not alone
I found Victory in Jesus when all hope felt lost
Because He Lives, I can face the dawn
It Is Well with My Soul, even when nights are long
From Blessed Assurance to How Great Thou Art
These are the songs that carried my heart
Amazing Grace
How Great Thou Art
Because He Lives
It Is Well with My Soul
These are the songs
That carried me home
